Intellectual property

On April 2, 2009, members of the Library Copyright Alliance joined public interest groups, library associations, and trade associations to urge President Obama to increase the balance in appointments to intellectual property policy positions and to create offices devoted to promoting innovation and free expression within the relevant agencies.

On September 10, 2008, the Library Copyright Alliance, as well as other institutions, submitted letters of concern to members of the Committee on the Judiciary to express concerns over the unbalanced approach to enforcement outlined in the Intellectual Property Rights Act of 2008.

On July 23, 2008, LCA submitted a letter to Stanford McCoy, Assistant United States Trade Representative for Intellectual Property and Innovation, which voiced observations on the issues to be discussed in negotiations on ACTA, specifically focusing on pre-established or statutory damages.

Statement of Library Copyright Alliance to WIPO Committee on Development and Intellectual Property, Second Session (Geneva, 7-11 July 2008) encouraging Member States to involve the international library community in local efforts at technical assistance and capacity building, which will serve to promote the goals of information access and a balanced approach to intellectual property protection.

On January 25, 2008, the Library Copyright Alliance, NetCoalition, and others published comments discussing the PRO IP Act of 2008 and its weakening of the “one work” rule.
